Background Concept 2 Reality

“Concept 2 Reality”, C2R, reflects the all-too-common concerns involved in the translation of laboratory research to everyday life in targeted societies and communities. In Indonesia, as in many other places, technological innovation can be the driver for the improvement of the lives of people in remote regional areas, sure; but how to make good on that promise where so many have failed to deliver before?

Researchers at the University of Palangka Raya have the support of the Universities of Groningen, Wageningen, and Twente in the Netherlands, as well as Bandung Institute of Technology and Gadjah Mada University, in bringing robust and innovative technology for the biomass conversion of the waste products of rubber cultivation (particularly biji karet, the rubber fruit kernel) to local communities. Of course, all PhD and post-doctoral research on reactor technology, enzymatic processing, protein valorization, operations management, and local economic resources development will be presented in the C2R Master Class, Makassar, 22-24 January 2014.

But also, we will confront our findings with straightforward business planning in a dedicated lecture, we will challenge them further with good practice examples from various Indonesian regions, and we will ask you to work with our experts in coming up with realistic approaches.

This Master Class in C2R will familiarize you with a multidisciplinary research effort in technology introduction in rural areas, challenge you to bridge that gap between concept and reality, and introduce you to a network for ongoing efforts that we aim to develop beyond our current projects.

Contents Master Class and goal

The main objective is to provide tools to apply academic outcomes to actual economic settings, with special attention to rural areas. The Master Class will be taught by academics as well as entrepreneurs, both from Indonesia and the Netherlands.

This is a Master Class in conjunction with the Open Science Meeting 2014 in Makassar, Indonesia. Based on the findings of the Breakthroughs in Biofuels cluster of the Agriculture Beyond Food Program of Ristek/LIPI and KNAW/NWO
