Sustainable palm oil as a role model for the agriculture beyond food and the green growth development in Indonesia

Keynote LiwangIndonesia and Malaysia, as the largest and the second largest respectively palm oil producers in the world, have a total production at least 85 per cent of the global palm oil and over 40 per cent of the world edible oil demand, which may contribute more than USD 42.3 billion to their economies. In Indonesia, over 4.5 million people depend directly on palm oil industry.  Besides food and financial contribution to the country, the rapid growth of the palm oil industry in Indonesia has contributed to the development of different derivatives also as feed, fiber, and fuel. However, the Indonesian government needs to take strong actions ahead to sustain such vital industry as its source of income in more environment friendly and social responsible perspectives.  By doing the palm oil industry sustainably, this industry will be a role model for agriculture beyond food as well as for green growth development.
